Creating a Project

Overview

A Project is the top-level container in Soarvo. You must create one before you can add locations or upload data. Only Administrators and Project Managers can create projects.

ℹ️ Projects appear in both portal and mobile: Once a project is created, it's available in the Soarvo Mobile App as well — assuming the right users have been invited and have mobile-capable roles. See Installing Soarvo Mobile.

Common Scenarios

Common questions when setting up a new project.

Which coordinate system should I pick?

Pick the coordinate system your source data uses — every file you upload to this project must match it. Common choices:

  • British National Grid (BNG) — EPSG 27700, for UK projects
  • Irish Transverse Mercator (ITM) — EPSG 2157, for Ireland
  • WGS84 — EPSG 4326, lat/lng (only if your data is truly unprojected)
  • National Highways grids — EPSG 112000-112101, for UK National Highways projects

If you're unsure, ask your surveyor — they'll know the CRS the original survey was captured in. See Glossary for CRS/EPSG definitions.

Can I change the coordinate system later?

Not safely. The project's CRS determines how every upload and feature is positioned. Changing CRS after data is uploaded would silently mis-position everything. If the wrong CRS was picked, the cleanest fix is to create a new project with the correct CRS and re-upload.

Which measurement system should I pick?

Metric for most international work. Imperial or Imperial US for US-based projects where measurements are reported in feet and inches. The measurement system controls how distances, areas, and volumes display in the Data Viewer and measuring tools.

Should I create a Location at the same time as the project?

Optional but usually convenient. Tick Create a location in the Location Details panel of Project Setup and Soarvo creates one Location for you immediately. You can add more locations later from the project page.

Why do I have to pick a Project Category?

The Project Category (General / Drone / Survey / Mobile Mapping / GIS) doesn't change functionality — it's for filtering and organising your project list. Pick the one that best describes the dominant data type or workflow for the project.

Steps

  1. From the home screen, click the + New Project card. The Project Setup page opens.
  2. Enter a Project name.
  3. Open the Project categories dropdown and choose one: General, Drone, Survey, Mobile Mapping, or GIS.
  4. Open the Coordinate system dropdown and select your project's EPSG (e.g. 4326 — EPSG:4326 (WGS 84), 27700 — OSGB 1936 / British National Grid). Use the search field inside the dropdown to find a CRS quickly.
  5. Open the Measurement system dropdown and pick Metric, Imperial, or Imperial US.
  6. Click Go to Project in the bottom-right to save.
⚠️ Important: The coordinate system you select here is fixed for the project. Every dataset you upload must use the same CRS — mismatches are the most common cause of data appearing in the wrong place on the map.

Set the project Name, Category, Coordinate system, and Measurement system.
💡 Tip: Use a consistent naming convention across your team, e.g. Client — Site — Year. This keeps projects easy to sort and search.
What happens next: The new project appears on the home screen. It will be empty until you add locations.

Project Menu Options

Click the ⋮ (three dots) on any project card to access:

  • Share — give other users access to this project (see Sharing Projects & Locations)
  • Settings — rename the project, change its category, or update other options
  • Delete — permanently remove the project and all its data
  • Display Project Dashboard — open the project's dashboard view
  • Export Project Settings — download the project configuration
⚠️ Note: Deleting a project permanently deletes all locations and data inside it. This cannot be undone.
